Using Microsoft Virtual PC

Since starting to work towards my MCSE 2003, I’ve been able to set up a lab here at the school with Server 2003 and an XP client to connect to the domain.  But I wanted to be able to do some lab work at home as well.

Enter the MCSE forums, particularly the MC MCSE Forums.  This is where I found out about someone in the same situation as myself, with the advice that they should download a copy of Microsoft’s Virtual PC 2007, and an evaluation copy (good for 180 days) of Server 2003.

So I grabbed a copy of both.  The Server 2003 came as a Virtual Hard Disk image that can be downloaded (along with a number of other OS/application images) here.

The only issue that I’ve come across is trying to install Adminpak.msi on the server, which would give me access to things like Active Directory Users & Computers.  But when I try to install it from a physical Server 2003 CD, I get an error message that it can only be installed on Server 2003 or Windows XP machines running Service Pack 2 or later.  My home machine is running XP Pro with Service Pack 3, just to eliminate that possibility.

Has anyone else come across this, and if they have, is there a solution?  I have to admit that I haven’t looked to see if there’s a copy of Adminpak.msi in an /i386 folder included with the VHD or not, but I’ll do that when I get home tonight.

Update Time

Since getting my MCSE on NT4 back in 2000, I’ve been putting off upgrading my certifications, but now with the opportunity to have the upgrading paid for by someone else, I’m going to upgrade to the 2003 cert (and the 2008 on my own).

I’m currently working on the 70-290 (Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment) and am looking to have the exam done in the next couple of weeks.

Next after that is ‘the Beast’ – 70-291.  Wish me luck.
